The Importance of Annual Well Woman Exams: Even If You Had a Hysterectomy

Many women think that after a partial hysterectomy (the removal of a woman’s uterus), or a full hysterectomy (the removal of the uterus, the fallopian tube, and the cervix), they no longer need to see their gynecologist. False!

A gynecologist looks at all parts of your pelvic region. So even if you’re past childbearing years, have had a partial or full hysterectomy, or are postmenopausal, a regular well-woman exam is still vital for a woman’s health and well-being.

At Female Health Associates of North Texas, located in Fort Worth, Texas, board-certified urogynecologist Dr. Jeffrey Hantes helps women of all ages and stages monitor their health with wellness exams that ensure they stay healthy and detect diseases early, when they’re most treatable.

Here, Dr. Hantes explains the importance of annual well-women exams, whether you have a uterus or not.

Stay up to date on vital health screenings and vaccines

You may still need regular Pap smears depending on the reason for your hysterectomy and the type of hysterectomy. If your cervix hasn’t been removed, it’s important to resume regular Pap smears

If the reason for a hysterectomy was because of cancer or precancerous cells, then a Pap smear can monitor if precancerous cells have progressed or if there are any other signs of changes. Additionally, while vaginal cancer is rare, it’s still a possibility so a screening for that type of cancer as other age-appropriate screenings is still necessary.

Offer advice on menopausal symptoms

After a full hysterectomy, women go through what’s called “surgical menopause.” During natural menopause, the ovaries slowly stop releasing eggs and producing estrogen. When the ovaries are surgically removed, some women experience more intense menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep issues, and bone loss.

Dr. Hantes and his team can help women navigate menopause to minimize symptoms and protect their health.

Pelvic exams

Pelvic exams can help identify lumps, masses, or abnormalities. Even without a uterus, Dr. Hantes checks your vagina, bladder and other pelvic organs that are still intact.

Sexual health

Sexual health is vital for women’s well-being. As women get older, they may experience low libido, pain with sex, or other issues related to sexual health. Dr. Hantes can work with you to relieve pain and other problems that can affect your sex life

Additionally, women may experience frequent urinary tract infections as they get older that need to be identified and treated.
